Originally written for the Magic Dream Band in Perth, this straight-ahead Basie style chart swings so hard you can fell it coming. Featuring solos from Trumpet and Piano or Guitar with ability to ‘open up’, this is a great soloing training ground without too many pitfalls. A fabulous concert or jazz gig chart, every band needs this kind of staple in their pack.

Originally composed as part of the movie sound track, this march has been skillfully adapted and rewritten as a competition piece.  While scored for concert band this versatile and juicy march may be played by a reduced line-up without losing any of its punch or consistency. This is one of those rare charts that can be played successfully by developing bands while still presenting enough challenge for presentation by more experienced ensembles. 633 squadron – eat your heat out!

This overture is enjoyable to the performer and audience alike. It offers confidence building rewards for the musicians and it is a spectacle for the audience. As the orchestra masters the various passages, the young musicians will be delighted to be part of such a full scale work. The performance area will be awash with movement, as the percussionists and strings gather momentum. The fast two beats per measure will also serve to keep everyone on their toes as they count their place and prepare to play. All musicians are involved and, by the end of your recital, all will be glowing with satisfaction.  Great as an opener or feature and is perfect as an introduction to competition pieces.

A chart to make Dorothy proud – or is it just ‘Wicked”? This popular melody is thrown around between all parts at various stages with some exciting and testing extremes in pitch (1st clarinet plays extensively above top C), dynamic range and backing rhythms. All parts require full chalumeau register and cross break into clarion register. This chart is not written for the faint hearted, and needs a strong lead. It will reward the hard work required from a developing ensemble and will bring the best out of skilled musicians. Feels good to play and sounds great too. This one is sure to fly!

Gavotte and Finale from “The Classical Symphony”

The famous ‘Gavotte’ and ‘Finale’ from Prokofiev’s 1st Symphony, the “Classical” Symphony, both scored for Saxophone quartet (AATB).
These versatile arrangements can be played individually or as movements. Ideal for any performance event from chamber music competitions, to major concerts and those tricky touring locations, these fun pieces always delight. This finale was used for the BBC Production of ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’, and has strong ties with youth, as Prokofiev was only 19 when he wrote it.  With such wide appeal these challenging classics will turn out to be a surprise favourite amongst performers and their highly appreciative audience.
